Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT)
What is OMT?
OMT focuses on improving the function of the muscles in and around the mouth (the orofacial region), particularly those involved in breathing, swallowing, speaking, and chewing.
OMT targets the following areas:
Mouth muscles:
Therapy helps correct lip, tongue, cheeks, and jaw position for speech, breathing, and swallowing.
Breathing:
Therapy encourages nasal breathing rather than open mouth breathing.
Swallowing:
Therapy corrects improper swallowing patterns (e.g., tongue thrust behaviour).
Common issues addressed with OMT:
- Open mouth breathing (day and night).
- Tongue tie (ankyloglossia). Preparation for a frenectomy, before and after.
- Thumb or finger sucking.
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing (e.g., tongue thrust).
- Speech issues or delayed speech development.
